This is the second purchase of this player. The first one I have had for well over a year and it has not let me down yet. This one is an exact copy of my first player but from a new retailer. I was looking for the same player through ProEbiz, who have been great to do business with. The player is a great buy for the money and very reliable. The sound is not the best when using the built in speaker, but I don't think ther is a great speaker this small anyway. I use the player to listen to audio books and some music. It has performed well and the battery life is great, well over fifteen hours of steady use. I have had nothing but trouble with touch screans in the past and this one does not use touch screan navigation. If you think that is your cup of tea, get a different model. if not this is a nice buy.

i got this MP3 for my birth day and it was awesome it dose most every thing a i pod can do for a fraction of the price. the video is good quality, the photos are good quality and can be rotated, the radio is a bit week(but i don't use it allot), the game is fun, and the best of all the music great quality it sorts it for you and you can make play lists on the device. in my opinion the i pod has ben passed up by Pyrus Electronics.

I can't comment on the plastic pry tools breaking, because I didn't even get that far. The screwdriver doesn't even fit the iphone screws! I ended up with two of these kits, and neither of them could take the first 2 screws off of the iphone. The tip of the screwdriver is already blunted after just a couple of tries to get the screws out, and I'm going to have to go to the hardware store and buy a real tool.

Well I bought this mp3 player not expecting anything impressive... I've owned several MP3 players and this one goes above and beyond any ones expectations for the money spent.. It's played my mp4 movies flawlessly and you don't need a converter, create a movies folder drag and drop the movie you want into the player.. The mp3 player has many options for music sound adjustments.. The ear-phones aren't high end but they are nice looking and ok sounding I bought some extra's and the sound quality is much nicer "low range".. I've utilized every utility on this device including the e-book option.. The text is very easy too read.. only draw back is that it only reads unicode or reg text files, which is just fine.. You can book mark your pages and it has font options large medium and small as well as white red or green for text color. Umm the game is well lacking.. they could really improve on that aspect or create others for download... Photo option is excellent.. radio isn't too bad like other reviews a little weak but the local stations come in strong.. Recorder speaks for itself it's nice too keep memo's record class lectures and this device does that with ease.. I bought an 8g mini sd card and it has absolutely no problems accessing and reading the information.. The battery life on a full charge will last about 6 hrs none stop use.. All and All I'd give this player a 9.56 out of 10 and for the money spent your getting a 10+ device.. Thats one place I'm rather impressed is how much I've spent for such an impressive device..

Don't waste your money. The 'pry' tools are absolute garbage. The only worthwhile tool in the pack is the screwdriver. Instead, go to a local hardware store and get a small screwdriver and suction cup. It'll cost you a dollar, tops.

I bought this because I just needed something to help me open up a 5th Generation iPod Video.
After receiving it in the mail, I discovered that the tools were really different from the picture shown. My tools were orange, and one of the screwdrivers looked different too. Since I was going to use the tools once, I didn't care.

First, I used the orange iPod opening tools, and their tips all broke off. I had to stick to using several guitar picks instead. I also thought the suction cup was a joke, but I actually used it to help me separate the face plate from the back plate, and it worked. The screwdrivers worked too, and helped me install things into my iPod.

I was disappointed that the opening tools broke, because I figured I might actually need to use them. The tools are also priced too high, for tools that break easily. If I were you, I would buy a different set of tools, especially if you might need to use the kit more than once. The is not even good for just one use.

Xooming right along..., March 28, 2011

Picked up the WiFi only version on Sunday. Went with WiFi only because I already have a DroidX and can use it as a WiFi hot spot cheaper than going with the 3G plan for the Xoom. I played with this and the iPad 2 side by side prior to deciding. iPad does somethings better and faster (switching screen orientation) and the Xoom does somethings better and faster. The advantage with the Xoom is having 2x the amount of RAM built in. So things like Google Maps keeps up better on the Xoom. I really like the browser on the Xoom better too, but that, like most of the rest of this, is personal preference.

The good:

- quality build
- great flexibility
- great camera's front and rear
- fully loaded WiFi only version (still has the GPS, gyro and even a barometer)
- Great graphics, nice display
- Not required to use iTunes to set it up and use it

The not so good:

- Screen is a fingerprint magnet, worse I have ever had.
- Not as easy to use out of the box as the iPad
- Not many aps for it yet

At the end of the day, if you use an iPhone and like it, you will like the iPad 2 better. If you use a good Android phone today and like it, you will like the Xoom much better. I spent Friday night and Saturday helping a friend set up their iPhone and the frustration over the lack of flexibility ultimately made my mind up for me. Once you get used to the flexibility you have with Android, you will get frustrated quickly with iOS.

Anyway, that is my opinion after using the Xoom for 1 full day...lol.

First of all I want to say that I own both Apple and Google/Android devices. I own iPod Touch and have played with iPad of family member who own the device. I also played with iPad 2 quite a bit at the store as well as from a friend who got it on launch day. I currently own original Motorola Droid and looking to upgrade to newer Android phone this summer. It is difficult not to compare Xoom to its competitor aka iPad 2. Therefore, this review will entail Xoom features (Wifi version) along with comparison to iPad 2.

Operating System - An iPad is more akin to a smartphone where as a Xoom is more akin to a laptop (Best Buy actually has it in laptop section instead with other Android tablets like Samsung Galaxy). Honeycomb feels more like a tablet. It's not just a row of apps and wasted space like iOS. Plus, you have room for customization (widget, live wallpaper, theme etc). There is also little detail that tech savvy will appreciate (outline grid, advanced settings, google labs etc) Honeycomb is still a bit buggy but not to the point that it becomes annoying. I only have several force close (app closed due to error) once in a while (Not all phone apps work with Xoom..yet). Obviously iOS which is a proven OS and was out almost 4 years ago is more stable than the Honeycomb, a brand new OS (optimized for tablet use) that was out a month ago along with its SDK. Google know Honeycomb still needs improvement, I know Honeycomb is unfinished and I don't mind waiting for even better experience.

Also, it's easy to transfer files between computer and Xoom. Just plug in USB and it acts as a hard drive then you drag and drop the files you want. There's also apps like ES File Explorer and Astro File Manager that help manage files/folder (like Window explorer). I believe iOS requires other softwares unless you just do music/movies through iTunes. Oh and I forget to mention that I hate having to everything tied/synced through iTunes. On Xoom, there's more freedom and you are not stuck with one software like iTunes.

Winner: To each his own but I like Honeycomb better.

Design/Apperance/Screen - Xoom is heavier but that is due to a solid build quality which I love. It is also thicker and has wider screen (more appropriate for movies than iPad 2). Although Xoom has higher screen resolution, iPad 2 still has brighter screen and more vivid look.

Winner: iPad 2 by little bit

User Interface - Some people say Honeycomb is too complicated to use. Well maybe to those who has been using only iPad. For someone who use both, I have to say it is pretty simple to use. iOS is more intuitive and foolproof but there is much more detail/option on Xoom that many people will appreciate.

Winner: Tie

Multitasking - One button and it takes you to 5 most recent apps for easy switching on Xoom. iPad 2 sort of have multitasking but not a true multitasking experience.

Winner: Xoom

Browser - If you use Chrome browser before, it is pretty much like that on Xoom. I prefer tabbed browsing over having to press button to open various windows on Safari on iOS device. You can type search directly on address bar like Chrome. You can sync bookmarks through your Google account. And yes I know there are other browser apps in the market. But for a stock browser app, Xoom has a better experience.

Winner: Xoom

Apps - iPad is way ahead in term of apps and it is because original iPad had at least 1 year head start vs Xoom. Not to mention Honeycomb is unfinished and SDK was recently released. However, the tablet apps that are available on Android market, most of them work great and look awesome. UPDATE: It turned out there're lots more Honeycomb compatible apps (I'm talking 1,000+). You just have to use keyword search such as "tablet" "xoom" "honeycomb" to discover the apps. Note that you can still use Android phone apps. The phone apps get stretched out but still keep the high resolution thus they don't look bad on the screen whatsoever. Give it time.

Winner: iPad 2

Customization - This is my favorite part about Android. You have open customization from themes, widgets to customized home screen and live wallpapers. iOS has none of that unless you jailbreak the device.
Winner: Xoom

Notification - If you have iPhone and iPad, you know how notification can be quite painful. Xoom has better notification system that show up briefly in bottom right corner as you get new email, app update etc. You can press it to view all notifications or remove them. Additionally, there is also LED light blinking notification on top right of the device.

Winner: Xoom

Hardware Performance - A5 vs Tegra 2 is still up for debate. Xoom seems to be as powerful as iPad 2 with exception of GPU (difference can be seen with gaming and screen brightness). iPad 2 has 512MB RAM... Read more

When I first got the Xoom about a week ago I turned it on and I really wasn't blown away. I use lots of devices, and my first impression of the Xoom just wasn't stellar. However, I could see the potential, and so I kept using it, I got some apps, I started to learn the interface and the depth of the features.

Sometime during day 2 of using the Xoom it really hit me. The Xoom and the iPad are like chess and checkers. When you first start playing chess (or trying to use the Xoom, in my amazing analogy) you feel overwhelmed and confused. You can't really do things smoothly, you don't understand the options, it just is not a great first impression. On the other hand, your first game of checkers (or using the iPad) is probably going to be pretty smooth. It isn't complex, most all the options and concepts are obvious and easy to understand and your first game is going to be pretty similar to your hundredth.

However, as you start to understand the Xoom (or chess) it really starts to grow on you. You understand what you can do, how to do it, the amazing depth and possibility in the device. While the iPad (or checkers) players are still having roughly the same experience time after time, with the Xoom every day of experience with the device makes it more powerful and enjoyable to use. In the end, the Xoom becomes a much better device than any of the competition; it just takes some time for you to learn what it is capable of and how to make the most of it.

As you can tell from the last three paragraphs I wasn't exactly impressed with the Xoom to start. I wasn't even sure it would replace my current device for most things. However, by day two I started to really "get" the device.

This first happened when I needed to look over and annotate a PDF someone had sent me. I downloaded it from my email, and was able to actually put it in the Xoom memory where-ever I wanted in whatever folder I wanted. Wow, that is kind of cool, can't do that on the competition. Next, I was able to open it in a PDF reader, using this fancy program (which I easily found on the marketplace). I went through and did what I needed (with an amazing free hand drawing tool, it was a snap!), then I jumped back over to email, attached the newly edited PDF and sent it away. Now maybe I just never tried hard enough, but I don't think that is possible on some of the competition. That freedom to download files, do what you need, and then send them away again. On the iPad apps I have used it always requires the files to be in something like Dropbox, which is fine, except it would have made what I did impossible without using a computer.

Another "WOW" moment came when I wanted to get some ebooks onto the device. Now, on my Apple products this is generally a pain, you hook the device to the computer, go open itunes, you go to a certain tab, and a certain area, and a certain feature, and if you do it all right you can drag your ebooks over to the reader. It was rather simpler on the Xoom. For the ebooks I had on my computer I just dropped them in Dropbox, then I downloaded them on the Xoom, and using the Xoom file manager I easily moved them into a new "Books" folder I made in the Documents folder. Fast, quick, and simple and done on the device, rather than on the PC.

However, what really blew me away was when I wanted some ebooks off the web. Using the regular browser I was able to just download them directly from the internet onto the device. I then used the file manager again and simply moved them to the right folder. This really did impress me, my tablet was uncoupled from the PC, I could browse the full web, download things, and then make use of them all without ever needing to tether to my computer. I was hooked.

With my new excitement at not requiring my computer to use my tablet I headed over to an Android App development forum. Here developers had posted lots of cool apps that were in beta or that they wanted to promote. On competing devices the only way to get an app is through the sanctioned and controlled portal, not so on Android (and thus Xoom). Using the Xoom browser I bounced around the forum, I downloaded beta apps, and then I was able to easily install them. Again, this is all on the device, and these were not approved apps, awesome.

Another example of something that impressed me came on my third day with the device. I was using the CNN app (which is free and tablet optimized, go check it out) and I watched a video of a story that I thought was really interesting, but it was one of those that is only a teaser, and the rest is on another site. When I hit these videos on my iPad I just have to try to remember to watch them later on a computer, because they are inevitably flash based. Not so on the Xoom, I typed in the address, the flash loaded up perfectly, and I was watching the video in full screen with no trouble.

I was a little skeptical about purchasing this player since it is made by a no-name company. Usually buying cheap things with no brand name has been disappointing for me but I decided to take the plunge and buy it based on the reviews I have read. I am very happy I took the gamble. This is really a nice player considering the price!

When I first got it I was impressed by the packaging. It looked nice and came with all the accessories. When I first held the player it felt alright--construction I think is above average but not as solid and durable as the Iphone. Why compare the body to the Iphone you ask? Well the answer is because it is made to look almost identical to the Iphone in terms of shape, feel, and overall look but obviously that is where the similarities end.

Now in terms of using it, I was very impressed by the wide varity of formats it plays. In the old days when I had other video players, they usually played a very limited formats or only one proprietary video format which required the dreaded and tedious process of conversion. This player is great because it easily plays a large amount of diverse formats with no problem at all. The mp3 player is also very easy to use--no conversion required.

Loading videos and music from my computer to the player is SUPER EASY! I love this. All you have to do is open the drive which corresponds to the player and copy and paste the video and mp3 files to the player. THAT'S IT! Nothing complicated. In fact, if you plug your player to your computer, your computer should open the player drive for you. How easy is that! Once loaded all you have to do is touch the video icon-to play a particular video file-and that is it!

Now for the most important and crucial part of the player: video playback quality and sound quality. I am happy to say the video quality is good but NOT great. I bet the resolution during video playback of an Apple multimedia player and other much more expensive players are slightly better, but they will cost you a lot more money than this player. Think $150 or more at least for a video player with higher quality playback and built-in 4GB. The sound is also good but not great.

The player also has a nice feature which I like which is a speaker. Yea the speaker is small and has somewhat of tinny sound but that said it is passable. The speaker is more of a convenience feature to be used in the event that you don't have your earphones. The sound with the included earphones are good but it will sound a lot better if you buy a good quality earphones like a Sony or Panasonic.

In terms of battery life, this remains a question mark since I just got this device and I really did not have a chance to really test it out in terms of battery life. I will update this review when I chance to really test it out.

Another aspect which I like to mention is about the durability of this media player. I don't know how many times you can drop it or abuse it before it stops working right. I know that the Iphone and other good products made by Apple are drop tested many times and are designed to take a lot of abuse and still work. I am a little concerned about this issue because cheap "knock-offs" are really disposable and are not really meant to last since they are cheaply constructed. So far I am happy with this player and I hope that it can take a lot of abuse especially since I have a baby newphew that likes to throw things!

Finally, what I like about this player is that it is EXPANDABLE. This may not sound like a big deal but it really is. The player comes with built-in memory of 4GB but you can add a mini SD card and expand the memory. In my research of media players I noticed most of them-including the very expensive ones-had fixed memory/built-in memory storage and that is it. That means that with other players if you have a lot of things you want to add in the future and if you reached the memory storage limit of the player, you either have to delete what you have stored or buy another player with more built-in memory. With this player you just simply add a memory card with your video/music files on it. You don't have to delete anything you have stored even if you have reached the storage 4GB limit. THIS IS A GREAT AND CONVENIENT FEATURE. Since I just got the player I have not had to use a memory card but it is nice to know that I could if I want to expand the memory storage capacity.

UPDATE:

After 2 weeks, I had to return this multimedia player. The battery life is very bad and it failed to stay on when I "turned it on"!!!! I sent emails to the company and they were nice and responsive. Eventually after trying everything they told me to return it back to Amazon for a refund. I contacted Amazon and I was able to return it with no hassle. I like that.

I have been waiting to get this. I love the multiplicity of it, but the battery charge is barely usable! I had an HP mini with a battery usage ability of NINE (9) hours! I knew this wasn't going to be THAT good, but didn't expect to have to charge it repeatedly in ONE (1) day!! I'm a full-time college student as well s a homeschooling mom of 6, I do NOT like to be tied to a plug! If there were anything else wrong with this, I would send it back ASAP! However, I will learn to make do. Just wanted to share this tidbit for anyone else that needed that little piece of 411!

Come on Amazon, what were you thinking with the colors for the newest wave of Kindle's? Can they get any uglier? And I would really like a cover that has at least an elastic to keep it closed. My favorite cover was for my Kindle 2, it was made by M-Edge, red leather, a cute leather strap to close the case and had a place for the light. I do like the light feature on the Kindle 2 and the Touch, great idea. The placement of the light on the Kindle 2 case was ok but left the bottom left corner a little dim, so it looks like the light placement on the new case will be better. This unit has a very large screen and it is very easy to see the video. I have a One Click YouTube downloader. Then I use the free software from CNET to convert it to the Media Players file extention. Then plug the Player into the computer and move the files over. I do not see how it can be any easier. There are lots of music videos on the internet ready to download. Even the expensive media players you have to covert to their format. In fact they can be more difficult to use because of copy protection that you do not run into on these units. If you want to download the music videos for free, then this is the one to get. It is like having a little TV in your pocket. Whatever is on TV can be recorded and played on your media player. Esp with the clear crisp digital image they have now. Just get a video capture card and your ready to go. Get some LG speakers and you can share your music with your friends and even look on the screen to see who is making the music. Plug them in at night and your ready to go the next day. Be sure to back up your files, because you never know when you will have to reformat & reload your computer or player. The small screen players are nice also. But this is a great deal with the large screen and the easy to use touch buttons.

This tablet does the job for the most basic use. I bought it for my daughter so she can learn her A,B,Cs. The battery dies quickly and is a bit sluggish. Again, you get what you pay for. It comes with a keyboard which is useful but keys are falling off already. I have had this for about a month. I recommend it if you have $100 to spare.

The MID has performed adequately for my needs. The internal inclinometers seem to lag quite a bit when trying to change the screen orientation. The addition of an RJ45 and USB ports on the dongle have worked very well for functionality, but need to be treated gingerly. The case provided is more of an easel than a true case; the tablet is not secured but just supported. The keyboard in the case makes it worth holding on to though.

I bought this player for my 11 year old and have had great luck with it. We found that it was easy to load music, videos and games on from my computer - just a matter of copying files from the computer to the device. It is also easy to use once you get the hang of it. The screen is bright and crisp and it seems to be pretty durable. My daughter loves the internal speaker (no ear buds required) and the touch screen display. The only "wishes" that we have for it are - a place to put the little "pen" on the machine, and that the touch screen were a little more sensitive. Her best friend has an I-pod Nano and was jealous of all the features that this little player has and how well it works compared to the I-pod.

The duo itself makes a fine small (10.1") computer and is quite capable even though it is a tad slow but it's not a powerhouse desktop either. When the Duo is added to the Dock it makes a fine pair. Sound from the stand alone Duo is minimal and barely a strength; however, when the Dock is added it makes a significant difference but, again, it is not a large set of stereo speakers either. I usually turn mine on in the morning and let it run most of the time just to hear the background, music or internet radio. I use an 8Gig flash drive to hold music and pictures; however, when I pair it with the desktop it will take several thousand Picasa pictures and show pictures all day. This is not a tablet but a netbook computer and well worth it. When it's time to go to the doctor and wait for what seems like forever I have my handy laptop and can use it for about 3 hours since my docs office has wireless.

I pre-ordered this along with the Kindle Touch for my wife's birthday, which is two days after the Touch is due to be released. (sure hope it isn't delayed too much.

Chicago John's review hits all the points very well. Yes, it is pricey but I'm paying for a "custom" lighted cover that appears to eliminate the need to "Rube Goldberg" up any alternative concoctions. I agree with other reviewers that an elastic strap would be desireable but maybe that's not a real issue. I gave it four stars only because we don't have it in our hands yet. If the elastic strap turns out to be an issue, I'll update this review and tell you where I bought some designer rubber bands.

Color choice is definitely a personal preference and I too wasn't excited about the selection. I chose the green because it seems to stand out in the crowd a little better. My wife has a habit of leaving things behind especially when we travel out of state. She's such an avid reader that I really don't think she'll leave her Kindle behind but I chose the green to help her spot it. (Just sayin')

Its unbelievable that several reviewers have expressed concern about the additional weight. The average book weighs between 12 to 16 ounces and they teeter as you hold them open with your thumb and they're difficult to balance sometimes as they apply pressure on your wrist. I don't think the "extra" weight should be an issue. (Oh, BTW, 3,000 books weighs approximately 2,625 pounds, or quite a bit more than a ton.)

The only real concern I have is what affect the LED light will have on the battery life of the Kindle. Will she need to re-charge every week or every day? I may have missed something but I'll revise this review after we get our hands on it in December.

Whereas all of these "reviews" are ideational, since no one, including me, has one, I thought I'd express my opinions; opinions which led to inclusion of this accessory with my Touch WiFi order.

At first glance, the price seems daunting; in comparison, for example, with the very functional $20 lighted cover I picked up for my keyboard Kindle. However, considering currently available alternatives for the yet-to-be released Touch, you could pick up a functional case, some also yet-to-be-released, for around $30 and add a clip-on light powered with batteries for another $20.

If my math is correct, you would have to spend around $50. And for that, you would have a cover with corner straps and a clip on light that, at a minimum, would preclude folding the cover back optimally for one-hand reading, the extra appendage protruding from the case creating various interference potentials while reading in bed, and necessitating carting around yet one more piece of paraphenalia. All this for a net savings of $10.

So maybe you could get a bare case for $20 and rig up your own clip on light for $15, but my point is that you would have a functional, but somewhat Rube Goldberg solution, and one, which I forgot to mention, requires the use of batteries and all that that entails in terms of both clip size and convenience.

The Amazon design was conceived and executed, I think, as an integral part of the design of the Kindle Touch. The Touch fits into a formed platic pocket that contains the swing out light which is powered by the Kindle battery; nothing protruding beyond the device to create potential interferrence, nothing else to pack, no batteries to worry about -- just keeping your Kindle charged, and a solution which is at least an order of magnitude better aesthetically. Not to mention real leather as opposed to fake plastic alligator-skin.

And for those wondering, I'm pretty sure it will involve a magnetic closure, like the cheap $20 case I have for my keyboard Kindle, the one with fake alligator skin and a battery-powered light on the back you flip over and hold in place with a "leather" hook? That's the one.

So, yes, the case represents a 60% price increase on my Kindle Touch purchase, but any other lighted solution isn't free. This may come down to a question of $15 - 20 savings versus a perfect design solution against one that is clunky but functional. And if you take this to its logical conclusion, why not just forego the entire thing and just stick to paper? Or, if you insist on using a Kindle, fabricate a cover out of corrugated cardboard with a rubber band and duct tape mount for a small LED flashlight? Isn't it all about the reading pleasure and convenience factor? It is for me, and pro-rating a $20 savings over, say, four years, is like $5 / year, if my math is correct. To me, that will be more than worth it.

Then there is the question of color choice. My current keyboard cover is black. I don't want to notice the cover color while I'm reading. But brown is nice, and the green is kind of cool looking. But we selected "purple" because on my calibrated monitor, it really isn't grape colored but more like a burgandy. I'm actually glad they didn't offer it in 12 or 24 color options because I have a hard time making decisions.

This is the best very drawing stylus made for the iPad. The size, pressure, conductivity and heft are just right. If only the little hoe at the top had been larger I might have been able to put it on a chain and not lose it! Guess I'll order a another and a backup.

I had previously purchased a $5-6 stylus on Amazon and was supremely disappointed with the quality, and it just wouldn't work properly on my iPad. This Griffin stylus on the other hand is of great quality and works MUCH better on my iPad. Nice rounded tip with rolls easily on the screen, and I have never had any incorrect spelling entries so far on my screen. Nice stylish product that works better than expected. Recommended for sure!
